Maintenance of hydraulic fluid in a system

Change hydraulic fluid

Good maintenance procedures needed to keep the fluid clean. The state of the fluid should be noted in a daily, weekly or monthly.

Due to the large variety of operating conditions, no definitive rule can be established for changing hydraulic fluid. However, it is known that when the filter elements of the system are replaced regularly, the life of the system increases. Periodic checking of the fluid by the supplier is recommended to confirm the suitability for continued use and develop the right type of fluid and the interval replacement filter elements.


Recommendation for the fluid

The fluid must be of high quality with a viscosity range between 100-180 SSU at 100 deg F. (38 deg C). The oil should possess anti-wear additives and cons have rust and oxidation.

Draining system

The system should be started and warmed fluid prior to draining the system. This will reduce the time to drain and allow impurities suspended in the fluid to be eliminated. Bleed fluid lowest point of the system will in most cases.

Systems that have accumulated deposits that have not been eliminated during vidangeage must be washed using a low viscosity fluid. This fluid should contain a rust inhibitor to protect metal surfaces against rust formation after discharge.

When the hydraulic fluid is added to the system, it should be pumped through a filter of 25 microns. If such a filter is not available, a funnel with a strainer 200 mesh or smaller may be used. It is very important that the fluid is clean and free of all substances that could harm the operation.
